Stats experts at FiveThirtyEight have been looking at all the possible records Liverpool could break this season as they storm towards the Premier League title.
Liverpool took another giant stride towards securing their first ever Premier League title with a 4-0 victory over Southampton at Anfield on Saturday afternoon, as after a frustrating first half against the in-form Saints, Liverpool turned the screw in the second half scoring four times without reply.
That win extended Jürgen Klopp's side's lead at the summit to a whopping 22 points. The gap could have been slightly decreased to 19 on Sunday had Manchester City beaten Tottenham Hotspur, but City fell to a second successive defeat in league and cup as Spurs ran out 2-0 winners. With another weekend of fixtures now ticked off the calendar, it seems almost certain, barring one of the most dramatic collapses in football history, that the Premier League trophy will be swapping the Etihad Stadium for Anfield come the end of the season.
But with the Reds now seemingly counting down the fixtures until they get their hands on the prize, there are a whole host of outcomes, in terms of when the league can be mathematically won, and records that are still there to be broken.
Statistics website FiveThirtyEight caluclates all kinds of probabilities for tournaments, worldwide elections and most other things you could think of, and has been crunching the numbers as to just how the table will look come the end of the season, not only in terms of league positions but also points tallies.
According to FiveThirtyEight, Liverpool win the title with a whopping 103 points to their name, meaning it would be three points more than the previous record set by Guardiola's men back in 2017/18. That season, City secured victory by a margin of 19 points ahead of cross-city rivals Manchester United in second-place, another record that still stands. Right now, that statistical model predicts City to finish second on 81 points, giving Liverpool a title win by 22 points, making it the biggest points gap between first and second in the history of the Premier League.
Away from the points gap between, if the Reds were to end the campaign on 103 points, it would mean that they will drop seven points in their final 13 league games, meaning they will either suffer two losses and one draw or one defeat and two draws. 103 points would require a minimum of 33 wins, however, which would also be the most in the history of the competition, and provide the Reds with a third broken record on their way to the title.
So, it might feel like the title race is over, but now Liverpool have to compete with themselves in order to make sure they record the most points, highest number of wins, and biggest margin of victory the Premier League has ever seen. If they manage that, they will go down as the greatest team this country has ever seen.
